Activities

From fishing day trips to local lakes, wonderful walks along the river and hillsides and biking along the Hurunui Heartlands Cycle Trail there is just so much to do in the Hurunui region. But don't forget, it's also an amazing spot to relax and recharge as well.

Our Favourite Activities

It is a short walk from the Homestead to the Historic Balmoral Fire Lookout. It's well worth the effort for the amazing panoramic view around the Culverden basin, with the snowy mountains beyond.

Enjoy a spectacular drive out to Lake Taylor, have a picnic lunch and then go for a wander around the lake, or try your hand at catching a Brown trout.  Lake Taylor is open to fishing all year around.

Drive out to the Historic St James Station, just 30 minutes from Hanmer Springs. Here you can explore the historic buildings, go walking, biking, fishing, hunting or just enjoy a quiet day in the North Canterbury High Country. We can even arrange a farm visit to a local farm.

The Homestead is located on the Hurunui Heartlands Cycle Trail and makes a perfect stopping point on your ride.

Enjoy the Surroundings

Explore the Hurunui and Waitohi Rivers, both just a short walk from Hurunui Homestead. At night wander out your bedroom door for some incredible night sky scenery & stargazing.

For animal lovers, spot the family of falcons who live in the hills behind us, meet our goats and ducks, or relax with our dog or cat in the sun.

Experience the serenity listening to the birds and the river relaxing on one of the verandas with a cuppa. Enjoy the garden, contemplate the day ahead or the day just gone.
